Collins, Mary Melissa

Clarenceville — Mrs. Marshall Young passed away in her 90th year at the home of Mrs. Florence Lewis.

Mary Melissa Collins was married to the late Marshall Young and they lived in Faddentown until they retired to their home on North Street. When her husband died, Mrs. Young took up residence with Mrs.Lewis.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Young left a gap in the community where they spent most of their lives. They were loyal supporters of their church, kind and thoughtful neighbors and staunch friends, who will always be kindly remembered by those who knew them.

Funeral services for Mrs. Young were conducted in Wesley United Church by Rev. Philip Gaudine of Lacolle.  Pall bearers were John Brown, Donald Miller, Gerald Mosher and Audrey Hunter. Interment took place in the Clarenceville Cemetery beside her husband.

Amont those present were: Mrs. Wilma Grant, of Park Ridge, Ill; Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thompson, of Hemmingford; Mr. and Mrs. William Collins, of Alburg Springs, Vt.; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Grant of Howick and Miss Vera Lodge of Bedford.

Knight, Harriett

News has been received of the death of Mrs. Charles B. Harriman in hospital at Manchester, N.H. on Jan. 26.

The former Harriett Knight was born in Bedford, eldest of the four children, of the late Mr. and Mrs. Allan Knight. She was in her  88th year. Mrs Harriman, a resident of Manchester for many  years, was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church and the Women’s Alliance of that church adn a meber of the Old Residents Association.

Predeceased by her husband, Mrs. Harriman is survived by three daughters, Mrs. William R. Marchand and Mrs. Ellwyn F. Stewart, both of Mancester and Mrs. Bertha Leoman, of Los Angeles, Calif., also by two grandchildren, Allen W. Stewart, a midshipman at the Naval academy, Annapolis, and Miss Barbara Ann Stewart of Manchester.

Mrs. Harriman was the last surviving member of her family. Mrs. Robert Palmer of Bedford was a sister and she had two brothers, Delbert Knight, of Montpelier, VT and Luther Knight, of Manchester.

The funeral took place at the Goodwin Funeral Home, Manchester, with interment in that city.

At his home in Cookshire, Que. February 22, 1960, beloved husband of Sarah Laird, in his 74th year. Remains resting at the home of his son Osborne Matthews. Bellemare Street, Cookshire, where prayers will be held on Thursday, February 25th at 1:30 p.m. followed by funeral in St. Peter’s Church at 2: p.m. Rev. Canon Dunn officiating. Riddell, Gretchen Muriel

At the Sherbrooke Hospital on Monday, February 22, 1960, Gretchen Muriel Riddell, beloved wife of the late Charles Elliott, and dear sister of Ruth in her 63rd year. Remains resting at her late residence, Sawyerville, Que. Family prayers on Wednesday, Feb 24 at 1:45 p.m Thence to Sawyerville United Church for funeral service at 2 p.m.  Interment in Maple Leaf Cemetery. Sawyerville Undertaking Parlor. Phone 34.

Westover, Walter B.

Frelighsburg — Residents of this community were shocked byt he sudden death of Walter Bennet Westover, assistant postmaster of the village on Friday, Feb. 12 in his 65th  year.

Although Mr. Westover had not been in good health for some time, he had appeared to show improvement lately and had attended a joint council meeting the evening before. His wife found him dead when she went to awaken him.

Mr. Westover had served on the council for a number of years, also on the school board and on different occasions was a warden of the Bishop Stewart Memorial Church. He was a past member of Golden Rule Lodge, I.O.O. F. when its meetings were held in the brick building, now owned by  William Menard, and served in sports associations until ill health forced him to retire.

Immediate survivors are his wife, the former Mabel Capsey; two daughters, Mrs. George Brown of Montpelier, Vt, and Mrs. James Burnour of Swanton, Vt.; a granddaughter, Ann; and a brother, John, of Bedford

The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, Feb 14, at two o’clock in the Bishop Stewart Memorial Church, Rev. William White, of Bedford, officating.

A solo, There Is No Night in Heaven was rendered by Mrs. Herbert Hopkins, with Mrs. M. Whitcomb at the organ. Bearers were Lloyd R. Boast, Neil Creiler, Calno A Soule, Duncan O. Tait, Norman A. Tait and Joseph Hebert.

Interment was in the cemetery at Mystic.

Friends and relatives from Montreal, Sutton, Knowlton, Cowansville, Dunham and other near-by points and this vicinity attended the service.
