B.J. Hastings, of Tomifobia

Tomifobia — The funeral of B.J. Hastings, who died at the Sherbrooke Hospital on Wednesday morning, Jan. 13, was held the following Saturday morning at eleven o’clock at Cass Funeral Chapel in Rock Island, and was largely attended by relatives, neighbors and friends, including the brethren of the Masonic fraternity in a large group.

Rev. L. Westman, pastor of St. Andrew’s Anglican church in Tomifobia, officiated, speaking in tribute of the deceased. Recorded organ music was played.

The inclement weather caused the Masonic brethren to conduct their last rites at the chapel instead of the cemetery.

The bearers, all of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge, were Harry Searles, Lawrence Winter, Wayne Hitchcock, Rupert Huckins, William Embury and Merrill Searles.

Interment took place in Crystal Lake cemetery, Stanstead.

Brigham Jewel Hastings the son of Hollis Houghton and Addie Vaiola (Cummings) Hastings, was born at St. Armand Station in 1879. He was educatd at St. Armand school and Bedford Academy.

On Nov. 19, 1902, Mr.Hastings was united in marriage to Maud Borden, of Phillipsburg, and to this union were born two children, a daughter, Eva. Mrs. Hibbard, and a son, H. Houghton Hastings.

For several years they lived on the Hastings Homestead there, and in 1910 came to Tomifobia, then Smith Mills and purchased the Fletcher Gibson farm. Three years later this was sold and the family returned to Phillipsburg, where Mr. Hastings was employed in a granite quarry. In 1916 the family came back ot Tomifobia and purchased the Clem Jenkins farm. In 1916 they sold and came to Derby Line to reside for a year, after which time they returned to Tomifobia and remained there the remainder of his  years.

About 29 years ago, Mr. Hastings became post master at the Tomifobia office and also had the mail route, in later years, after the discontinuation of train service for mails, Mr. Hastings travelled daily to Stanstead for the mails. About 16 years ago, he suffered a heart attack and shortly after he gave up the post office and sold his grocery business, retaining the mail delivery route. ONly a few days prior his death he had motored to Stanstead for the mail.

Mr. Hastings was greatly interested in civic affairs and had served on the Odgen Municipal council. There are several roads in this municipality which have been built under his supervision. He was also interested in politics.

He was a member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge, affiliating from Nelson Lodge at St. Armand where he had been Worshipful Master. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the numerous and beautiful flowers. When the church of St. Andrew’s here was renovated form a school house into a church. Mr. Hastings was one of the members who contributed much and in after years he continued to serve on the church boards.

Mr. Hastings is survived by his wife; daughter, Mrs. Hibbard; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Hastings; a granddaughter, Shirley, Mrs. Kevin Burke, and Mr. Burke, and three great-grandchildren, all of Schefferville; two brothers, H.C. Hastings, St. Armand, and Arthur G. Hastings, of Abbottsford, B.C.; a sister, Addie, Mrs. Ray Chappell, Swanton, Vt.; and nieces and nephews.

Among those attending the funeral were: Mrs. Hastings and Mrs. Hibbard, Tomifobia, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Hastings, Beebe, Mr. H.C. Hastings, St. Armand, Mrs. Ray Chappell, Swanton, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Hastings, cousin, Richford, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hastings (nephew), of Montreal, Mr. Joe Colombe, niece and Mr. Colombe, of Bedord, and many others from Tomifobia, Fitch Bay, Beebe and the Boundary Villages.

Nixon, John E.

Richmond — The sudden death of John E. Nixon, which took place at the Sherbrooke Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 23, 1960, came as a great shock to his family and friends.

Mr. Nixon, second son of the late John Nixon and his wife, Sarah Ann Newell, was born at Bethel, North Ely, Que., on Oct 17, 1891. Two brothers predeceased him. Frederick E. Nixon on April 9, 1894 and Frederick H. Nixon on Oct. 19, 1955.

Mr. Nixon graduated from St. Francis College, Richmond, in 191, after which he entered the services of the Eastern Townships Bank and served in different branches of the Townships for four  years.

When World War I was declared he enlisted in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles at Montreal and after several months training in Canada went overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving in France and was seriously wounded. On recovering he joined the Royal Air Force in  England, where he trained till the end of the war.

On returning to Canada, he spent a year’s vacation at home, then entered the service of the bank at Toronto, Ont., and later at Montreal and Ayer’s Cliff. He retired from head of office of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Montreal in August 1933 and with his sister Muriel came to reside in Richmond.

Mr. Nixon held the office of secretary treasurer of the Protestant Central School Board of Richmond until in June 1955 owing to ill health.

He leaves to mourn his death two sisters, Miss Muriel Nixon of Richmond, and Mrs. Dora Millar of Calgary, Alta.; Mrs Bella Nixon, sister-in-law, of Manchester, N.H.; several nieces and nephews, Miss Dorothy Nixon of Florida, Mrs. Fred Nixon and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nixon, all of Manchester, and Dr. and Mrs. Roy L . Millar and family of Ithaca, N.Y.

The funeral serve was held from his residence on Tuesday, Jan. 26 to St. Ann’s Anglican Church, of which he was a member. Rev. H.I . Apps officiating. The choir rendered the hymns, Unto the Hills Around, Now the Laborer’s Task is O’er and On the Resurrection Morning.

The beautiful floral tributes and messages, of sympathy expressed the affection and esteem in which Mr. Nixon was held. The deceased was a life member of St. Francis Lodge A.F. and A.M> Richmond and a service  was held on Sunday evening Jan. 24 at his residence, Stanley Ave.

The pall bearers were six members of the Lodge: L. Somerville, K.G. Nourse, C. D’Almaine, M.T J. McKee, G. McMorine and C. Stevens

Interment took place in Gallup Hill Cemetery.
